Importance of vitamins


The term vitamin has originated from two words vital and amine, because vitamins are required for life and were originally thought to be amines. Vitamins are chemicals which are required in very small quantities to keep you healthy. If a particular vitamin is missing from your diet you will suffer from a deficiency disease. Vitamins, on the basis of their solubility, can be classified into two categories: fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. Different vitamins have different significances respectively.
Significance of vitamins:
Vitamin A: Vitamin A Helps to form skin and mucous membranes and keeps them healthy, thus increasing resistance to infections. It is necessary for vision during night, it promotes bones and tooth development. It is specifically good for the eyes and hair. It is found in green leafy vegetables, yellow, red and orange fruits, whole eggs, milk and carrots. The deficiency of vitamin A or retinol causes night blindness
Vitamin B: Vitamin B is required by the body to make coenzyme A; the group of vitamins is helpful in metabolic activities and is also involved in making red blood cells. Vitamin B is not actually one single vitamin; it is basically a complex of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12 among others. Its deficiency causes beriberi.
Vitamin C: The vitamin C is significant for keeping body tissues (such as gums and muscles) in good shape. It is also helpful if one gets a cut or wound because it helps in healing. This vitamin also helps your body resist infection. It is found mainly in citrus fruits. Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D is the vitamin needed for strong bones and teeth. Sunlight is an important source of vitamin D. Vitamin D, if not taken in appropriate amounts can cause rickets.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E is an antioxidant and neutralizes unstable free radicals, which can cause damage thereby providing protection against damaging substances. It protects the lungs from becoming damaged by polluted air. And it is vital for the formation of red blood cells. . Breast milk is an exceptional supply of vitamin E.
Vitamin K: The main function performed by vitamin K is to help the blood clot. This is when certain cells in the blood act like glue and stick together at the surface of the cut. Vitamin k is found in dark, green leafy vegetables and is also synthesized by bacteria in the intestine.
