What all do vitamins do to our body?
The term vitamin has originated from two words vital and amine, because vitamins are required for life and were originally thought to be amines. Vitamins are chemicals which are required in very small quantities to keep you healthy. If a particular vitamin is missing from your diet you will suffer from a deficiency disease. Vitamins, on the basis of their solubility, can be classified into two categories: fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins.
Benefits of vitamins: 1. Vitamin A Helps to form skin and mucous membranes and keeps them healthy, thus increasing resistance to infections. It is necessary for vision during night, it promotes bones and tooth development. 2. Vitamin B is required by the body to make coenzyme A; the group of vitamins is helpful in metabolic activities and is also involved in making red blood cells. 3. This vitamin is significant for keeping body tissues (such as gums and muscles) in good shape. It is also helpful if one gets a cut or wound because it helps in healing. This vitamin also helps your body resist infection. 4. Vitamin D is the vitamin needed for strong bones and teeth. 5. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and neutralizes unstable free radicals, which can cause damage thereby providing protection against damaging substances. It protects the lungs from becoming damaged by polluted air. And it is vital for the formation of red blood cells. 6. The main function performed by vitamin K is to help the blood clot. This is when certain cells in the blood act like glue and stick together at the surface of the cut.
Vitamin deficiency diseases: The deficiency of the vitamins causes various diseases which are as follows:
The deficiency of vitamin A or retinol causes night blindness.
Vitamin B is not actually one single vitamin; it is basically a complex of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12 among others. Its deficiency causes beriberi.
Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy.
Vitamin D, if not taken in appropriate amounts can cause rickets.
The deficiency of vitamin E leads to retarded growth and fertility.
Vitamin K deficiency causes improper clotting and hemorrhage.
Vitamins, if taken in proper amounts, help in the growth and development of the human body.
